FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Where are you located? Bright Beginnings Preschool is located on the Sunnyvale Cupertino Adult Ed Campus at 591 W. Fremont Ave. in Sunnyvale. Our office is in room 4.
What do you teach? Bright Beginnings is a parent-participation preschool. Our goal is the development of the whole child: emotional, physical, intellectual and social. This, along with parent education component makes our program a well-rounded experience for parent and child.
Our school is designed for your child to learn through exploration and play. Engaging in activities that interest them allows for children to experience feelings of control, success and competence. Adults are partners in this process providing many opportunities for children to make choices, take initiative and lead activities.
Bright Beginnings teachers are experienced in developing curriculum for both the adults and children in our programs. Through the combination of classroom participation, observation, and parent discussion, adults will develop the skills needed to be effective parents.
Why do you have field trips? Field trips are an important part of our program. They help both children and adults learn more about community resources. Children learn by doing and field trips add an important dimension to their learning. Most classes will have at least one field trip per quarter. Examples of Field Trips: Farm, library, Nature Hike, Science Museum, Train Ride, etc.
What do children do in the Gym? All children learn through movement. Exploration of the gym equipment promotes balance, spatial awareness, hand-eye and foot-eye coordination, agility, strength and flexibility.
In Gymkids, children are free to choose and explore. They are encouraged to be creative and spontaneous within the boundaries of safety. There is no competition at Gymkids. We recognize that each child is unique and develops at his/her own pace. The teachers plan equipment arrangement, activities, music and songs each week. Explanations and guidance are provided both individually and as a group. Parents learn how to guide and encourage their child's physical development while allowing their child to move independently with self-awareness and safety.
How do I register for classes? The easiest way to register is to phone our office 408-522-2707. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. On Fridays, the office is closed from 12 - 1 PM for Staff lunch.
What documents do I need to provide to register for preschool? You will need to complete a Registration form and an Immunization form which are available on our website. The Immunization form (Physician's Report) is a record of your child's current immunizations and must be verified by your child's physician. In addition, each adult in the Preschool program must provide a valid (less than 4 years old) TB test. Information about the TB test is located on page 2 of the Physician's report on our website. These documents are due before you attend your first class.
What documents do I need to provide to register for Gymkids? No documents are needed since this is a Quarterly class.
What do I do if I can't get my TB test before the first class? You may request a 1-week extension in the Parent Ed office when you come for class. You must present your TB test results at the next class.
What do I do if my pediatrician needs more time to complete the Physician's Report? You may bring your child's official immunization record (Yellow California Immunization Record, or other Doctor's record) to the Parent Ed office before the first class. This record will be photocopied and used as a temporary record until the official form is completed.
Can I change classes? Yes, you may transfer on a space available basis by requesting a transfer form the Parent Ed office and paying a $20 transfer fee.
I don't have a baby sitter. Can I bring my other child to class? In order to provide the most enriching experience for all participants, no additional children may attend regular preschool classes. Babies 6 months and younger may attend with the enrolled adult. We are planning to offer a 1-day/week Family Preschool class where parents can bring older and younger children. This class is scheduled for Fall 2008
Do you have any classes for children only? No, because all of our programs receive partial funding from the State of California for the Adult Ed portion of the class, the parent is the enrolled student and must attend. In our multi-day preschool classes, the parent participates on one of the school days while the child attends all sessions for which they are enrolled.
When should my child start school? For social development, all children should attend some preschool before entering Kindergarten. Our classes are unique in that the parent and child are both students. This is a fun bonding experience as well as a learning experience for both parent and child. It is not necessary to do full day or full week classes in order to be properly prepared for Kindergarten. Our philosophy encourages you to try many different activities with your child. Many of these activities are free and offered through your community center and library. Preschool is just one portion of an enriched early childhood experience.
What if I can't come to school today, can I send my husband? Yes, if you are unable to attend class on your workday you may send a substitute. However, this should only be done in case of illness or emergency. In order to ensure class and program continuity only one adult is registered and may attend class. If you are unable to attend, and another adult will be bringing your child on a permanent basis, they must register with the office (no charge) and submit a valid TB test.
What is expected of the parents when they attend class with their children? All parents are expected to participate actively with all children and adults in their class. They are expected to follow school and classroom rules. Their main duty is to supervise children for safety. Parents do wear and follow work cards in the classroom to ensure that all areas are supervised and so children can participate in many different learning experiences. You will find more detailed information about participation requirements in the Parent Handbook.
