Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Certificate Program

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program Certificate course is a training program designed to prepare students for state certification with the Department of Health Services (DHS). All scheduled hours meet DHS requirements. During their training students will experience the demands of their new profession by having clinical experience in a long-term residential facility.
The role of a CNA covers a broad spectrum of health care activities. A primary consideration is the safety of resident and staff. Some of the areas covered in our course of study are:

  • basic nursing - observation skills
  • personal care skills - therapeutic and interpersonal communication
  • emergency procedures - basic restorative services
  • infection control - understanding residents' rights & independence


This certificate program will help students develop and highlight personal qualities that are sought by employers in the medical field: honesty, integrity, pride in personal appearance, and the ability to work as a team player.

CNA Fundamentals: CNA Fundamentals =180 total hours: Theory (70 hours) + Clinical (110 hours)
Theory and Clinical Practicum at a skilled/sub acute nursing facility (7 weeks) are taken concurrently.
Class is held on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday for 8 weeks.

Prerequisite Courses: Completion of ESL training at advanced high level.
Students must have a current CPR card or complete CPR training while enrolled in the program.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:
The ability to follow verbal and written instruction in English or completed Advanced High ESL Level. This vocational program may require applicants to take a test in English proficiency before being accepted into the program.

Prerequisites and course criteria (no exceptions)
It is the student's responsibility to ensure that program requirements and subject prerequisites are met.

Entrance into the CNA Program requires completion of the following:

CHECKLIST FOR CNA REGISTRATION:

  • Certified Nurse Assistant Application 283-B forms completed and signed
  • $90 American Red Cross (End of course state exam)
  • Live Scan and clearance form for DHS (finger printing) 2 copies.
  • Sunnyvale-Cupertino Adult & Community Education registration form completed
  • $600.00 Certified Nursing Assistant Course Fee

Completed original physical examination materials including:

  • Health History Form (completed by student)
  • Health Appraisal Form (completed by Physician)
  • Physician results of blood work and immunizations
  • Blood work and Immunization form (attach copies of blood work and immunizations.)
  • Rubella and Rubella immunization or titer*
  • Tuberculosis screening: PPD (2 step) within 9 months prior to entrance
  • or Chest X-Ray within 5 years. (two TB tests are required within two weeks) DPT within last 10 years
  • Hepatitis B immunizations or titer*
  • Varicella immunization or titer*
  • California drivers license or valid California identification and Social Security Card
  • Proof of current CPR certification original card required. (Health Care Provider course)
