Question: When can I take ESL classes?
Answer: You can enroll in ESL classes from the end
of August to the beginning of June, followed by a 6-week summer
session. Before you can enroll in a class, you must first take an
ESL placement test. You can either call or come into the ESL Office and
register for the test. The ESL Office phone number is (408)
522-2704. It can take up to 30-60 days before you get an
appointment for the test. At the completion of the test,
you will either be enrolled in a class, OR be put on a waiting
list if the class is full.
Question: How old do I have to be to take a class?
Answer: Anyone 18 or over can take classes.
Question: How much does it cost?
Answer: All ESL classes are free.
Question: I'm only going to be here for a few months. Can I join a class?
Answer: Each ESL class level takes one semester to complete. Generally, we
consider a minimum of 6-8 months duration of stay to wait for testing
and class placement, before a student can realize any benefit from the
instruction at any given level.
Question: I used to take classes; can I come back
Answer: If you have dropped out of classes and are
returning within a 12 month period, you can return to the same class if
there is space available, without re-testing. You must first come
to the ESL Office to re-register. After a 12-month absence, you need to
test again to return to a class.
Question: Can I transfer to another class?
Answer: Changing class times is not always
immediately possible. You should try to complete your level
first. However, if you think the level is too easy or too hard,
or if you have a time conflict, talk to your teacher about transferring
to another class.
Question: Can I take more than one ESL class?
Answer: Sometimes, depending on which classes you want to take. Contact the ESL Office.
